Fetal Monitoring

Fetal monitoring helps us understand more about your labor and how the baby is handling the stress of labor.

External monitors are initially used. They go on your abdomen and give us information about when the contractions are happening and also information about the baby’s heart rate.

Internal monitors give more information. They can tell how hard the contractions are and also provide more accurate and detailed information about the baby’s well being.

The internal monitors are called fetal scalp electrode (FSE) and intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC).
