When you come into the operating room, you will see all kinds of equipment. Each has its specific use. We always have much more equipment then we typically need so we are prepared if emergencies or unexpected circumstances arise.
The metal equipment is washed and sterilized between each surgery. There are instruments of all shapes and sizes that each have a specific function. There is also disposable equipment that is used for only one surgery. The disposables include the drapes, gowns, gloves, sponges, towels, and suction equipment. Suture is also put on the table before the surgery, and sometimes during the surgery, according to each individual surgeon’s preferences.
Try to not be intimidated when you see all the equipment, most of it will not be used for your surgery. It is good to be prepared in case the unexpected happens. Please see introduction to the operating room for more information.
